Antique (Pioneer) Plates

An antique plate is a special license plate that is available for an antique vehicle. The definition of antique vehicle requires that the vehicle be owned solely as a collectors item. If the owner wishes to use the car on a regular basis, it is by definition not an antique vehicle and this section does not apply.

To receive an antique plate, the owner must apply to the Department of Transportation, pay the appropriate plate fee, and show proof of payment of sales tax on the vehicle. The plate will be issued directly from the Department of Transportation. The plate is valid as long as the current owner continues to own the vehicle. Annual renewal is not necessary.

An antique plate has limited use. The vehicle can only be legally driven on antique plates for the following purposes:

• to, from and during organized car club activities, parades, exhibitions, tours, or related activities
• road testing before, during or after repair
• moving the vehicle from one location to another for security
• driving for the sole purpose of keeping the vehicle in running condition

Courtesy and Sample Plates

The Department of Transportation may produce courtesy or sample plates. Sample plates are distributed to counties and other organizations for display. Sample plates will have all zeros or the letters "SAMPL". Courtesy plates may be applied for and may have other combinations as requested by the applicant and approved by the department. Sample and courtesy plates may not be used as a legal vehicle plate. The Department of Transportation currently charges $5 for a courtesy plate.

Disabled Veteran License Plates

Disabled veteran license plates have a distinctive disabled veteran symbol on them in place of the county number. A veteran who receives 50% or more service connected disability compensation from the veteran's administration and is a Wyoming resident at the time of application may apply for a special disabled veteran license plate for one motor vehicle owned by him, other than a bus or a motor home. Once issued, the plates must be displayed on the vehicle for which they were issued.

Since no county number is on the plate, the county designator is "DV".  However, the regular renewal sticker from the county must also be affixed from year to year to validate the plate.

The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner as regular license plates. Starting July 1, 2005, there is no fee charged for the plates if the applicant applies at least 30 days prior to the last day of the annual registration month for the vehicle.

If the Veterans so chooses, he/she may display a Veteran's license plate and still receive the free registration.  The Veteran will apply for the plate using the Choice Disabled Veteran Plate application: Choice Disabled Veteran Plate Application

Duplicate Plates

To replace the same number that you lost:

You can order a replacement set of your particular number for $30. It takes about 4-6 weeks to arrive. We can issue another number off the shelf to run on in the meantime, or you can park the vehicle until the replacement arrives.

Embossed Plates

Any person required to register a vehicle in Wyoming may apply to WYDOT for embossed license plates for any vehicle owned or leased by the applicant.

• These license plates may take 10-12 weeks for processing.
• The fee to emboss your license plate is $50.
• A copy of your registration and the $50 fee must accompany the application or it will be returned.
• Your plate will be delivered to the county treasurer's office in which the vehicle is registered. For any new Prestige Plate orders in which the vehicle is registered in a county other than the owner's home county, the plates will be sent to the county treasurer's office of the county in which the applicant made the request. After that first year, the vehicle owner can then renew their Prestige Plates in their home county.

When a person is applying for an embossed plate, they cannot apply until they have the plate they want to emboss in their hand. Two exceptions are if they are applying for a new prestige plate or a new amateur radio plate.

Emergency Medical Technician Plates

Effective July 1 , 2007, an emergency medical technician may apply for distinctive plates for any motor vehicle owned by the EMT. To qualify, the EMT must be certified as such by the Wyoming Department of Health, and upon application must submit a written statement of eligibility and a copy of the current EMT certification. Annual statements are required for continuing renewals. All normal registration fees are charged for the plates and renewals. DOT will supply the county treasurer offices with application forms for the plates.

Firefighter Plates

A firefighter employed by a city, county, state or duly created fire protection district or a volunteer firefighter must submit a written statement of eligibility preferably on Fire District/Department letterhead, signed by the Fire Chief or designated assistant, to the County Treasurer along with this application before Firefighter Plates or a renewal sticker may be issued. A firefighter retired from his department with at least 10 years of service must obtain a written statement signed only by the fire chief.  The chief of the fire department or his designated assistant must sign a written eligibility statement for each firefighter annually. The statement of eligibility must be presented to the county treasurer before firefighter plates or validation stickers for firefighter plates may be issued. DOT will supply the county treasurer offices with application forms for the plates.

The following items must be mailed with your application:

• A copy of death certificate or other documentation indicating the service member's death while a member of the armed forces. Do not submit an original.

If approved, your license plates will be forwarded to the County Treasurer's Office you indicated on the application.

The $30 application fee will be paid by the Wyoming Veteran's Commission.

Handicapped Plates

Handicapped license plates have the international symbol of access in the place of the last two digit positions on the license plate. To qualify for this plate, the applicant must submit an application to the Department of Transportation along with a signed statement from his physician outlining his qualifications for the plate. To qualify, the applicant must have a disability that limits or impairs his ability to walk, or have regular responsibility to transport such a disabled person. Further guidance on disability is found in W.S. 31-2-213 (d).

The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner and for the same fees as regular license plates.

National Guard License Plates

National Guard license plates have the letters "NG" on them in place of the county number. Any person who is currently serving in active or retired status with the Wyoming National Guard may apply for the special license plates for motor vehicles owned by him. The application is made to the Department of Transportation. When accepted, the plates are sent to the county of the owner's residence.

The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner and for the same fees as regular license plates. Since no county number is on the plate, the county designator is "NG". If the applicant qualifies. The regular renewal sticker from the county must also be affixed from year to year to validate the plate.

Novelty Plates

Any person who wants to order a Novelty plate may do so by filling out the below application and mailing it to WYDOT with the appropriate fees.

Novelty plates cannot be displayed on a vehicle at any time.

Personalized Prestige Plates

Personalized plates may be obtained for use on all regularly registered vehicles except:

• vehicles obtained for sale or demonstration by licensed dealers
• vehicles for which radio amateur plates are issued
• apportioned vehicles
• vehicles for which specialty plates are obtained.

Personalized prestige plates will be sent to the county treasurer of the county for which the plates are ordered. Upon payment of the regular registration fees, the county treasurer will issue the prestige plates in lieu of regular plates. If the vehicle has a current regular registration, the regular license plates must be surrendered to the county treasurer upon issuance of the prestige plates.

Prestige Plates Allowable Combinations:

• A maximum of 5 letters or combination of 5 letters, numbers, and spaces
• Only capital letters and Arabic numbers
• No symbols
• No combination with more than three (3) W's or M's (not allowed: WMWW)
• No combination of entirely numbers unless the first digit is a zero (0)
• No combination consisting entirely of numbers followed by a single alphabetic suffix (not allowed: 11A, 12B, 123C)
• No combination that spells, connotes, abbreviates, or otherwise stands for language that is obscene, vulgar, indecent, or pruriently suggestive
• No combination that duplicates a currently issued plate or conflicts with a series of letter and number combinations on a regular issue license plate.

Refunds:

No refund of the application fee will be given if the applicant marks the wrong vehicle type.  If uncertain as to the correct type of plates to order, please contact your County Treasurer.

Prestige Plate Application

Prisoner of War License Plates

Prisoner of war (POW) license plates have a distinctive POW symbol on them in the place of the county number. Any person who, while serving in the armed forces of the United States, was incarcerated by an enemy of the United States during a period of conflict may apply for one or more POW plates for a passenger car, truck or motor home. The applicant must be a resident of Wyoming at the time of application. The application is made to the Department of Transportation. When accepted, the plates are sent to the county of the owner's residence.

The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner as other plates, but the first plate received by a POW is granted with no fees. However, since no county number is on the plate, the county designator is "PW". the Department of Transportation also currently requires a special code in the code box of the registration to identify the no fee plate. POW's may receive more than one POW plate, however the owner must pay full fees upon registering any vehicle with a second or any subsequent POW plate.

The regular renewal sticker from the county must be affixed from year to year to validate the plate.

Purple Heart License Plates

Purple Heart recipient license plates have a distinctive purple heart symbol on them in place of the county number. A veteran who was an official recipient of the U.S. military purple heart award may apply for the special license plates for motor vehicles owned by him. The application is made to the Department of Transportation. When accepted, the plates are sent to the county of the owner's residence.

The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner and for the same fees as regular license plates. Since no county number is on the plate, the county designator is "PH". The regular renewal sticker from the county must be affixed from year to year to validate the plate.

Radio Amateur Plates

A radio amateur plate has the radio call sign of a holder of a novice class or higher two-way radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. The license holder may apply to the Department of Transportation for one passenger and one truck plate. If approved, the Department of Transportation will send the plates to the county of the owner's residence. The county treasurer will issue and renew these plates in the same manner and for the same fees as regular license plates. However, since no county number is on the plate, the county designator is "AR".

Street Rod & Custom Vehicle Plates

A vehicle may be considered a Street Rod if it meets the following criteria:

• Must be a 1948 or older model,  or manufactured after 1948 to resemble a vehicle manufactured before 1949

AND

• The vehicle has been altered from the manufacturer's original design, or has a body constructed from nonoriginal material

A vehicle may be considered a Custom Vehicle if it meets the following criteria:

• Vehicle must be at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948, or was manufactured to resemble a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948

AND

• Vehicle has been altered from the manufacturer's original design, or has a body constructed from nonoriginal materials

Custom & Street Rod License Plate Application

Tribal License Plates

Any person required to register a vehicle in Wyoming may apply to the University of Wyoming for distinctive Eastern Shoshone or Northern Arapaho Tribal license plates.  ***Applicants are not required to be a tribal member to apply for this Specialty Plate***

General Provisions

1. A completed application shall be mailed to the address shown at the bottom of the application, along with a fee of $100 made payable to the University of Wyoming.  ($70 fee for Tribal Scholarships and $30 special plate fee)
2. The application will be reviewed by the University and, if approved, forwarded to WYDOT.
3. Plates will be issued in consecutive order and forwarded to the county treasurer's office.
4. Current plates must be surrendered to the treasurer's office upon issuance of the Tribal Plates.

University of Wyoming Plates

Effective January 1, 2008, any person may apply to the University of Wyoming for a statement of eligibility to receive a distinctive UW plate. To receive the eligibility, the applicant must pay a fee to UW of $100 (which will be indexed for inflation). In addition, the applicant will have to pay the $30 fee that would normally accompany a prestige plate. All regular registration requirements and fees will apply to these plates.

University of Wyoming Plate Application

Veteran Plates

The 2009 Legislative session authorized new veteran plates effective January 1, 2010. This will allow honorably discharged veterans to purchase and display plates that designate the branch of service they served in.

The cost is $50 per plate, and requires a written statement of eligibility from the VA. Applications are available at the County Treasurer’s Office or on-line via the link below. To qualify, you must have served at least one period of honorable service which resulted in the issuing of a DD 214.

The following items must be mailed with your application:

• A Copy of your DD 214 discharge certificate or separation papers. Do not submit an original. Upon verification of service, the copy with be destroyed.
• Payment of $50.00 (check or money order) made payable to WYDOT.

If approved, your license plates will be forwarded to the Treasurer's office. Allow 4-6 weeks for processing.
