SALARY

A deputy's pay is dependent upon qualifications.

  • Pay range: $19.50/hour to $23.50/hour.
  • Overtime is available and paid at 1.5 times the deputy's regular rate of pay. 

LONGEVITY PAY

Longevity is paid to employees after two years of successful employment with guaranteed raises in longevity pay every five years. 

  • 2-5 years of service: $100/month
  • 5-10 years of service: $150/month
  • 10-15 years of service: $200/month
  • 15-20 years of service: $250/month
  • 20-25 years of service: $300/month

HOLIDAY PAY

A deputy receives 88 hours of holiday pay throughout the year. If a deputy is required to work on a major holiday they also receive 1.5 times their regular rate of pay in addition to holiday pay.

PAID VACATION

Employees are able to accrue up to 240 hours of paid vacation. Employees begin accruing their time on day 1 as a county employee, but the rate of accrual increases as years of service increase.

  • Less than 2 years of service: 8 hours/month (96 hours/year)
  • 2-5 years of service: 10 hours/month (120 hours/year)
  • 5-10 years of service: 12 hours/month (144 hours/year)
  • 10-15 years of service: 14 hours/month (168 hours/year)
  • 15-20 years of service: 16 hours/month (192 hours/year)
  • 20+ years of service: 18 hours/month (216 hours/year)

PAID SICK LEAVE

Employees accrue 8 hours of paid sick leave each month. However, employees are not capped at the amount of sick leave they can accrue. 

RETIREMENT

Platte County employees are part of the state of Wyoming retirement system. As such, deputies will enjoy a world-class retirement. Each month, Platte County pays approximately 18% of the employee's pay into retirement, which is NOT deducted from the employee. This retirement contribution is essentially a monthly bonus of approximately $800!

HEALTH, DENTAL, VISION & LIFE INSURANCE

Platte County offers health, dental, vision and life insurance to each of their employees. Employees pay nothing for their dental or vision insurance. Health insurance is through Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Wyoming with a deductible as low as $1,500. Monthly premiums paid by the employee depend on which plan they choose:

  • Employee only: $74.52/month
  • Employee & dependent: $141.57/month
  • Employee & spouse: $156.42/month
  • Family: $223.56/month

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the on-duty Shift Supervisor. Responsible for maintaining a secure detention facility and the safe custody of inmates.  Performs a variety of tasks associated with facility operations and the incarceration of prisoners. Deputies are able to test for patrol positions as usual.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise and control inmate behavior during the operation of the detention center; or restrain by force if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.

Exercise appropriate judgment in handling of special needs situations or inmates; provide assistance in classification of inmates.

Enforce procedures for secure areas; read and suggest updates for detention and departmental policy and procedures.

Operate security control panels and doors; issue and record issuance of security keys, perform other Control related duties as prescribed.

Responsible for help cleaning the control room.

Communicate effectively and coherently with other staff or inmates with approved facility communication devices including the telephone system, intercom system, and portable or base radios; demonstrate effective communicative skills with inmates, public and staff.

Maintain general security of detention center; stop penetrations and escapes; pursue fleeing inmates; perform rescue and other security related duties which may involve quickly entering or exiting secured areas; lifting or dragging heavy objects; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles; crawling in or through confined areas; running distances to provide assistance; using bodily force to gain entry to areas requiring assistance; continuous foot patrol; climbing of stairs; performing dangerous duties without assistance and / or in hazardous conditions.

Perform searches of people, vehicles, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, indoor and outdoor areas which may involve feeling or detecting objects, walking, kneeling, bending or stooping for long periods of time.

Engage in functions in confined areas including direct / indirect supervision of inmates, food services, health care services, equipment accountability, working rotating shifts and responding to facility when requested during off-duty hours.

Maintain control over inmates by always being aware of their location and documenting such.

Administer basic emergency first aid and CPR.

Transport or escort inmates (hostile, aggressive, passive, etc.) using handcuffs and other approved restraints in accordance to policy and procedure; stand for long periods of time when necessary to provide security or for safety reasons.

Maintain fire safety; extinguish small fires; appropriately report and act accordingly; inspect areas for fire prevention purpose; participate in fire prevention activities; detect environmental conditions such as heat or smoke, unusual or excessive noise or alarms, odors, etc.

Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitments, release orders, summons, and other documents.

Perform crisis intervention functions in accordance with policy and procedure; recognize abnormal behavior and take appropriate actions.

Possess manual dexterity and sufficient digits to manipulate keys, keyboards and buttons, manually operate heavy doors, count and collect inventory items, qualify with a firearm in accordance to policy and procedure for use under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force.

Read computer and camera screens, distinguish colors, possess full field of view while supervising inmates, be able to understand and utilize the detention center computer program in all of its aspects.

Load, unload, aim and fire firearms from a variety of body positions utilized and prescribed for by departmental policy and procedure.

Participate in periodic on and off-site training activities for staff.

Maintain weapon, equipment and uniforms in functional condition as prescribed for by departmental policy.

Participate in inmate disciplinary actions or on inmate disciplinary boards.

Maintain inmate property and storage.

Collect, resolve and / or direct to appropriate individual or division, inmate complaints, grievances or requests.

Have basic knowledge of kitchen and laundry duties.

Operates various forms of communication equipment including telephone, computer, intercom system and two-way radio communication systems to achieve and maintain contact with staff. 

Records all local bookings for the Detention Center on a separate video recording system.

Checks and verifies status and identification of visitors to ensure authorized persons access to the facility.

Controls access in and out of the secure areas of the detention center by use of a touch screen system to control all doors and closed circuit television monitoring systems to keep track of all movements.

Documents facility inmate admission and release as well as special incident information including those of a security, medical or emergency nature.

Responds to emergency alarms and makes the initial announcements of situation and operating door controls at the same time to allow a rapid response to internal emergencies; assign initial response of officers to affected areas of the facility.

Receives phone calls for service and / or information; routes and transfers calls as necessary.

Notifies proper authorities, agencies and command staff of emergency situations within the detention center.

Maintains all facility security and non-security keys; ensure that all key’s checked-out is performed by authorized personnel only specific to that secure area or restricted area.  Maintains the facility key log.

Monitors all of the facility’s alert, alarm and emergency systems; check for proper function; ensure proper operation of them at all times.

Enters data into the computer system via computer terminal with information gained from arresting officers, booking officers or other detention staff.

Maintains constant surveillance and observation of deputies.

Maintains security observation of inmate workers; control the access and movement of inmates within the security area at the direction of deputies.

Maintains constant knowledge of identity and location of all non-inmate or staff within the security area of the detention center.

Ensures compliance with detention center policy and procedure and post orders by all personnel.

Enters into detention center computer system all activities relevant to the detention center.

Maintains arrest files for each inmate within the detention center containing commitment and follow-up documentation regarding each individual incarcerated.

Prepares file documentation and other reports.

Performs multiple concurrent tasks and mange priorities.

Maintains contact with Platte County Communication Center in case of an emergency.

May be required to supervise shifts if a Sergeant or Corporal is not available.

OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES

Safely operate a motor vehicle for long periods of time, day and night, in environmental conditions such as fog, snow, ice, rain, smoke and / or high winds.  Operate a motor vehicle in congested traffic conditions.

Gather information in criminal or disciplinary investigations by interviewing, obtaining statements or victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants; exercise independent judgement as to when probable cause is present for disciplinary or criminal complaint.

Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views of opinions of inmates and other persons in an antagonistic environment.

Process and release inmates including taking photographs and legible sets of fingerprints, and / or palm prints.

Observe and control visitors and inmates prior to, during and after visits.

Arrange for professional service for inmate’s personal problems including health care problems, religious and legal counseling and suicide prevention.

Give information to visitors.

Report facility mechanical failures.

Perform related duties and other responsibilities as assigned.

Skills:

Operate modern office equipment including computers.

Operate a transport vehicle safely.

Safely operate and qualify with duty firearms.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must complete Detention Officer Basic Course Within 1 year of hire

Weapons Qualification.  All deputies must pass a semi-annual firearms qualification course with their assigned duty firearms(s)

CPR.  All deputies must be certified semi-annually in CPR.

FTO Program Completion.  Newly hired deputies will receive 12weeks of on the job performance training through the established Field Training Program (FTO) before being assigned to work on their own. 

High School Diploma (or equivalent)

Wyoming Drivers License (or ability to obtain one)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to sit, stands, walks, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and climb, sometimes for lengthy periods of time.

Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.

Availability to conduct shift work and is on call and / or on stand by to cover shifts.

Exposed to noise, confining work spaces, and cleaning chemicals.

Ability to deal with upset hostile, belligerent, mentally ill, unsanitary, suicidal, and manipulative prisoners.
