Sheriff David Russell

David was elected Sheriff of Platte County on November 8, 2022, at the age of 31, making him the youngest Sheriff in Wyoming and the second youngest in state history. He officially took office in January 2023, becoming the 15th Sheriff of Platte County.

David’s law enforcement career began in 2012 when he joined the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, where he has held a variety of roles over the years. Additionally, David served as a seasonal Wyoming Park Ranger for six seasons, gaining valuable experience in public safety.

David holds an associate's degree in general studies, a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a focus on homeland security and emergency management, and a master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Criminal Justice, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing his expertise in the field.

As Sheriff, David is passionate about serving the citizens of Platte County and looks forward to collaborating with the community to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all.

Our mission is carried out by the dedicated men and women of the Sheriff's Office, who are not only law enforcement officers but also active members of the community. As the Chief Executive and Administrator of the Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff oversees the Patrol Division, the Detention Division, and the Communication Division, ensuring each area operates effectively and efficiently. The Platte County Sheriff is an elected official, serving a four-year term.

The Sheriff's Office is comprised of 25 sworn law enforcement officers, 7 communication officers, and 7 civilian personnel. Together, we serve a county spanning approximately 2,008 square miles, working tirelessly to maintain a safe environment for all who live, work, and visit here.
