Platte County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office proudly operates a Dual Purpose K9 Unit, which plays a crucial role in the safety and security of our community. These highly trained dogs are not only exceptional at detecting illegal drugs and apprehending fleeing suspects, but they are also beloved by local schoolchildren who enjoy giving them pets and hugs.
Our K9s are trained in a variety of specialized tasks, including tracking, apprehension, building searches, and deputy protection. They are invaluable assets when it comes to tracking fleeing fugitives or locating illegal substances.
Assisting School Administrators and Teachers
The K9 Unit regularly conducts demonstrations at local schools, showcasing the dogs' abilities in a safe and educational manner. At the request of either School District 1 or 2, the K9s are used to "sniff" for drugs and drug paraphernalia in common areas, locker rooms, and vehicles on school grounds. This proactive approach helps maintain a drug-free environment and supports the safety of students and staff.
Partnering with Business Owners
The Sheriff's K9 Unit also partners with local business owners to assist with narcotics detection. The K9s help search common areas of businesses for drugs, offering support to businesses participating in Drug-Free Workplace programs. Additionally, we provide valuable community contacts for narcotic-related information and assistance, ensuring that local businesses are equipped to maintain a safe and secure environment.
The K9 Unit is a vital part of our commitment to serving and protecting the people of Platte County. These highly trained dogs, alongside their handlers, provide essential services that contribute to the safety and well-being of our community.
