Every eight years, Wyoming has a new issue or "series" of license plates. That means the background picture and/or colors on the plate are different from the current license plate series. Everyone will get a new series plate when they renew their vehicle registration for 2010.
Each county in the state has the option to save or hold back a sequence of numbers as "reserved". These are held back for the current holder of a reserved number to have first choice of keeping the same number for the new license plate series.
In Platte County, your license number is "reserved" IF the number you currently have is found in the following sequence:
Car |
Truck |
Large Trailer |
Small Trailer |
Motorcycle |
1 - 3500 |
1 - 3500 |

The reserved and non-reserved plates for the new 2009 Teton series will be available January 2, 2009. The reserved numbers will be held for the full year of 2009 (specifically January 2, 2009 through December 30, 2009.
Note: During the changeover from the 2001 to the 2009 series, it is possible that a non-reserved number (i.e. passenger #3501 or truck #6750) may be registered to two different
vehicles and two different owners at the same time. Both plates are legal because one is the 2001 Devil Tower Series and one is the new 2009 Teton Series.

I am moving here from another state and need to get my plates. What do I need to do?
Bring your vehicle, the title, and proof of insurance. If your vehicle is financed, bring your current registration from your other state. We will give you a sales tax exemption form to take to the County Clerk’s office to get a Wyoming title. Once you have a Wyoming title, we can plate your vehicle.
Can I get a refund on my plates when I sell my car?
Wyoming does not allow for a refund of licensing fees; however, you can transfer any remaining credit to a newly purchased vehicle.
I want to give my low-numbered plate to someone else. What do I have to do?
You can give your reserved number plate to another person if you choose to. Please fill out the reserved number plate transfer form and bring it to the treasurer’s office. At the time of renewal, they can put that low number on their car.
Can I give my license plates to the purchaser of my car?
Only family members may transfer fees from license plates. However, if you wish to give a particular plate number to someone else, you can do so. Just keep in mind, it will only be the plate number you are giving them. They will have to pay their own registration fees, even if the plate still has current stickers.
Back to TopThe car I bought already has plates on it. What should I do?
The plates on the car belong to the person who owned the car, not to the car itself. You are required to get your own plates and registration.
Can I find out who owns a certain license plate number?
License and registration information is protected under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994. Only people with legal, legitimate reasons for requesting this type of information is entitled to it. If you do have a legitimate reason for obtaining registration information, please fill out the Information Request Form to request the information.
I lost one of my license plates! What do I do?
You can order a replacement set of plates if you are attached to that particular number. It takes about 4-6 weeks to get in. If you do not care what number you have, you can just come in and get a new set off of the shelf. The fee for either option is $8.00.
I know I paid for my license stickers, now I can’t find them!
We can look up your plate to be sure you initially purchased new registration stickers. If you did lose them, we can issue you a new set for $6.00
I heard that another county’s license plates are cheaper, what’s up?
Every county in the state uses the same calculations to issue registrations. No matter where you license your car, the registration should be the same.
Back to TopCan I pay for my plates online?
Yes, if you have a regular renewal and only need stickers you can pay for them online. Go to officialpayments.com, click “Make a Payment” then “Local Payment”, Select Wyoming, Platte County Treasurers Office, and Vehicle License renewal”. Click Continue. Fill out the amount of your registration, click continue. Fill out all the information and submit. Keep in mind that any time you pay with a credit/debit card you will be charged an additional convenience fee by your credit card provider. This fee is usually about 3% of the total cost.
How much will my plates cost?
Please see the "Registration Fees" section of Registrations
Can I put my truck plates on my new car?
Passenger plates can only be on passenger vehicles, and truck plates only on trucks. You can tell the difference in two ways. 1) Look on your registration and if the letter after the "8" is a “P” then it is a passenger plate. If it is a “T” then it is a truck plate. (For example 8-T-7657 or 08-P-7657) 2) Look on the physical plate. Truck plates say “TRK” across the top of the plate. Utility Passenger Vehicles (SUV’s or suburban’s etc) can be plated as either trucks or passengers. It is generally less expensive to plate those vehicles as passengers as the state fee for passenger vehicles is not based on weight.
Examples of MPV's include: 4-Wheelers, Mules, Rangers, golf carts, etc.
Beginning January 1, 2008, all MPV owners will be required to obtain a title for that vehicle. Registration will not be required unless the vehicle is operated on the streets or highways. Customers can obtain the information sheet and checklist to determine if their vehicle is a MPV and if their MPV fits the requirements to operate on public roads. Customers can also read the MPV Checklist if they have further questions regarding Multi-Purpose Vehicles.
